MSU interior design students receive Hospitality Industry Network scholarships

Three students majoring in interior design at Mississippi State University were recently honored with the Hospitality Industry Network, or NEWH, scholarships.

Junior Evelyn R. Fioranelli of Cleveland, senior Gina H. Novello of Jackson, New Jersey, and senior Gabriella M. Sutherland of Jackson were among 10 recipients honored by the Sunshine Chapter this year, which includes central Florida and Mississippi.

Fioranelli, who has plans to work in the hospitality sector upon graduation, said she has always been intrigued by the way interiors influence how people feel and function.

“My dream is to design hotels around the world, creating memorable and welcoming spaces for people from all walks of life,” she said.

With passions for both interior design and landscape architecture, Novello hopes to work at a multidisciplinary firm that allows her to explore both areas.

“I aim to bridge the gap between interior and exterior environments, creating holistic spaces that are not only functional and aesthetically compelling but also rooted in human well-being,” she said. “By thoughtfully connecting interior and exterior design, I hope to enhance the everyday experiences of those who use these spaces.”

After finishing her undergraduate studies in interior design and psychology, Sutherland plans to pursue dual master’s degrees in environmental psychology and sustainable design.

“My ultimate goal is to work at the intersection of research, policy and practice,” she said. “I hope to lead initiatives that promote universal design and evidence-based architecture, creating spaces that are not only beautiful but functional, inclusive and resilient.”

The scholarship recipients are invited to attend the “Friday Night Fever Fundraiser” on Oct. 10 in Orlando and receive two years of associate membership after graduation.
