Mississippi State University Department of Art Professor Marita Gootee was recently honored in the 26th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards.

Gootee received the following:

  • Best in the alternative category for "Against the Odds," an encaustic coated contact lumen from her photographic series "Last Contact"
  • Against the Odds by Marita Gootee shows flowers in special type of blurred photography

Best in the cellphone category for "Pyramid Lake, Nevada"
  • Honorable mention in the alternative category for "Ants," also from her photographic series "Last Contact"
  • Honorable mention in the cellphone category for Aliens Leaving After Vacation.

The photography concentration coordinator said encaustic images take a long time to create, but she enjoys them.

"The contact lumen images alone can take up to a month being exposed to sunlight, so it is fun to have the smart phone to capture images fast and keep the creative juices going," she said. "Being able to exhibit both in the same exhibition is very rewarding.”

The 26th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards Exhibition will be on display this fall at the Mediterranean House of Photography's Fotonostrum Gallery in Barcelona, Spain.

Gootee's "Last Contact" series has been made possible by support from the Mississippi Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts through a MAC Individual Fellowship Grant and MAC Mini Grants with additional support from the Department of Art and Mississippi State University.
