VP Risk Management

Montgomery Martin Contractors, LLC (MMC)

Montgomery Martin Contractors, LLC (MMC) was formed in July of 1995. It was the vision of founder H. Montgomery Martin to create a service-oriented, client-focused company that could provide quality construction services for a reasonable cost. Since 1995, the company has grown into a premier General Contractor / Construction Manager located in Memphis, Tennessee, with the majority of our work attained from references and repeat business with its clients.

Tell us a little about what you do in your role with MMC?

I lead our team efforts to address the risks associated with our business. These include our QC (Quality Control) Program, Safety, Insurance, Surety, SDI (subcontractor default insurance), Legal, and project management technology such as Procore.

Why did your company join our advisory board?

The summer of 2012 I had the opportunity to tour the studios while on a college tour with my son (who subsequently graduated from the Building Construction Science Program (BCS)) and was very impressed with the program. At the time I was our Operation Manager, with recruiting as one of my responsibilities, and I couldn’t wait to get a BCS graduate to join our company. So, May 2013 we hired two graduates of the program and have continued to hire graduates and interns every year. I immediately jumped when given the opportunity to join the advisory board to be associated with something so special for our industry and to share my experiences to help strengthen the BCS program.

What piece of advice do you have for students

Get as much construction-related work experience you can during summer internships or co-ops. This experience will serve you well. When you are the intern, be that person who is always looking and asking to do more!
