Policies and Procedures

Policies and Procedures

  1. Send all requests for desktop or server support to helpdesk@Sarc.msstate.edu If necessary, requests will be forwarded to MSU-ITS.

  2. ALL e-mail correspondence from faculty to students and from students to faculty must use the student and faculty official MSU email addresses (NetID@msstate.edu). Faculty will not open or communicate with students using a non-MSU address. This policy is in response to the recent viruses that have hit the campus.

It is University policy that e-mail is now considered official correspondence, and every student is required to regularly check their e-mail. The faculty will consider their e-mails to students as official notification and information.

  3. Use of University-owned equipment and software is subject to the “MSU Policy for Use of Computing and Network Resources.” This document is available at http://www.its.msstate.edu/Information/Policies/net_use.php. All users of University-owned computing and network resources should read, understand, and follow the policy prior to using University-owned computing and network resources.

  4. Content of University web pages is subject to the “Policy On World Wide Web Pages and Other Electronic Publications at Mississippi State University.” This document is available at http://www.msstate.edu/dept/audit/0113.html.

  5. Use of Student email accounts is subject to the “Electronic Communications Student.” This document is available at http://www.msstate.edu/dept/audit/91126.html.

  6. Use of the University network system for uploading or downloading of copyrighted material is strictly prohibited. Helpdesk support will be denied to anyone running Napster, KaZaA, Gnutella, WinMX, or other file sharing software. Music and movie files will automatically be deleted from CAAD servers each night.

  7. Installation or use of unauthorized or pirated software on University-owned computers is strictly prohibited.

  8. All hardware and software purchasing, setup, and installation should be coordinated through the CAA+D IT Manager for proper planning, inventory control, and to assure that all purchases are consistent with the long-range technology plan.

  9. The CAA+D computer requirements will be enforced by denying CAA+D Helpdesk support to students with non-compliant computers.

  10. Student computers MUST have current virus protection installed and kept up-to-date. Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition is available for free from MSU-ITS at http://www.its.msstate.edu/Services/Software/introsymantec.php. This software keeps itself up-to-date automatically. Students without current virus protection will be denied CAA+D helpdesk support. Don't waste money purchasing virus software. The MSU SAV software is both free AND mandatory on all computers connected to the MSU network.

  11. The CAA+D IT Manager will implement regular Tech Support web and FAQ updates.

  12. The plotters and printers remain online 24/7. Plots and prints may be claimed only when the lab is open. Plot and print prices are posted on the door of the plotter lab and on the CAA+D web site each semester. Plotter lab hours will be posted on the door of the plotter lab and on the CAA+D web site at the beginning of each semester. The plotter lab accepts MoneyMate only.

  13. Faculty should schedule and coordinate project due-dates and plot deadlines with the CAA+D IT Manager at the beginning of each semester to allow coordination of plotting schedules. Plot deadlines should be set on weekdays before 5:00pm.

In general, a plot deadline will be considered to have been met if the students' files are, " In the Queue," by the posted deadline, unless other prior requirements are made by the professor and coordinated with the CAA+D IT Manager. Please note, that after the Plot Deadline, there are often 50+ files in the queues which may take two or more hours to complete printing after the deadline. Therefore, ideal times for Plot Deadlines are between 1pm and 3pm on weekdays. Also, Studio Coordinators should coordinate deadlines to allow an, “Open,” day between deadlines. This will allow for the maximum potential use of the plotter lab, and will also permit advance scheduling of work-study students and plotter supplies.

The Laser Printers are generally exempted from Plot Deadlines. These printers are much faster than the plotters, so congestion is less of a concern. Students will be permitted to continue to use the Laser Printers post-deadline unless prior restrictions are made by the professor and coordinated with the CAA+D IT Manager.

Professors can inform the CAA+D IT Manager of how they wish to handle students who try to plot post-deadline. The CAA+D IT Manager can pause or cancel late jobs, or late jobs can be permitted to plot. Faculty who have questions or concerns about late plot should see the IT manager. The Print Server keeps logs of every job printed, including the students NetID, filename, and date and time of plot.
