CAAD Receives HUD Grant

The Mississippi State University College of Architecture, Art, and Design has been named one of seven national universities to receive a Community Design and Planning Grant from the Universities Rebuilding America Partnership (URAP). The URAP grant program was created by the Department of Housing and Urban Development to enable university students and faculty to get involved in the rebuilding efforts associated with hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

As a result of this $300,000 award, the College of Architecture, Art, and Design has established the Gulf Coast Community Design Studio to provide architectural design and planning assistance to communities on the Mississippi Gulf Coast affected by the recent hurricanes. The MSU Gulf Coast Community Design Studio will utilize the funds to provide planning and architectural services for rehabilitating damaged houses and building new ones for displaced residents of East Biloxi, Mississippi. Under the direction of Professor David Perkes and in collaboration with the local non-profit Biloxi Relief, Recovery, and Revitalization Center, the studio will provide the following services: an assessment and GIS mapping of the target neighborhoods to analyze and visualize the neighborhoods parcel by parcel; neighborhood meetings to engage the community in the planning process and to identify rehabilitation and construction needs; design of innovative housing rehabilitation strategies and new house construction plans; construction documents for non-profit developers and builders; and continuing architectural services during construction.
