SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE
Study Abroad
The School of Architecture is in its 27th year of student (and, on occasion, faculty) exchange with the University of Plymouth in Plymouth, England and its 17th year of exchange with the Delft University of Technology in Delft, Holland. From 1998-2001, an exchange among MSU, the University of Illinois at Chicago, the University of Manitoba and the University of Waterloo (both in Canada), and the Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana in Mexico City and the Universidad Autonoma de Yucatán in Merida (both in Mexico) took place.
All participants in study abroad exchange programs are required to supplement their residency at the host university with a minimum three weeks of travel in Europe, either before or after the residency. This requirement is intended to maximize the learning opportunities while overseas. During this travel period, students are required to keep a professional journal and must make daily entries in either written or graphic form.
The summer of 2003 marked the inauguration of a six-week summer study program in Vicenza, Italy in conjunction with the Vicenza Institute of Architecture at the University of Florida. The program is open to all students who have completed one year of study in the College of Architecture, Art, and Design. In 2004, the School of Architecture joined the Consortium for Architectural Studies located at the Virginia Tech, Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center in Alexandria, Virginia. All schools participating in the Consortium share the common goal of providing their respective students with an academic environment that utilizes the metropolitan area as an education laboratory in which to pursue the study of architecture, landscape architecture, urban design and planning.
Unless otherwise noted, all off-campus study and/or exchanges take place during the fall semester of the fourth year. Visiting students are asked to make presentations to MSU students and, upon their return, MSU students make presentations to the School. MSU students also present their design work to the S/ARC faculty to ensure that the School’s pedagogical requirements are being addressed and met.
