SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

Awards + Recognition

Robert V. M. Harrison (L) and Dean Jim West (R)
On Sunday, May 7, 2006, the annual Recognition Day ceremony was held in Bettersworth Auditorium in Giles Hall where nearly 35 architecture students were recognized for outstanding achievements. In addition to students, faculty member Michael A. Berk and practitioner Robert V. M. Harrison were also recognized. Professor Berk was honored with the annual $500 Allen & Holshall Faculty Award and the 2006 Tau Sigma Delta Faculty Book Award. The first tribute recognizes teaching excellence; the second, a presentation by third- and fourth-year students to the teacher "who inspires them to excellence." Berk, a University of Florida graduate, is a recognized authority in ecological design and sustainability, and was recently named the F.L. Crane Endowed Professor of Architecture in recognition of his research, outreach, and teaching accomplishments.

Robert V. M. Harrison, FAIA, FCSI was selected the 2006 Tau Sigma Delta Silver Medal Recipient.? This award is given to the practicing architect from Mississippi who has contributed to both the professional and academic environment in our state.? Mr. Harrison was selected based on his long commitment to the School beginning in the early years of the program teaching the Professional Practice courses and continued generosity in sponsoring our lecture series. The acculturation of architectural students through the exposure to ideas by leading architectural designers, theorists, philosophers, and artists is one of the most profound ways to educate them and, more significantly, to engender the passion for life-long learning.
