Admission to the School of Architecture is limited and highly competitive. Prospective students should communicate directly with the School to request current information and arrange for a building tour and admissions advisement. The admissions process for the School of Architecture requires the completion of the MSU on-line application form, and the submittal of a separate Supplementary Application Form.
Students wishing to be considered for admissions into the Fall Design Studio should have all of their application forms submitted and processed by January 15th. The School of Architecture Admissions Committee will begin reviewing applications on the 15th of January and will continue reviewing them on the 15th of each month until April 15th. Students applying after April 15th will automatically be placed in the Pre-Architecture program and must follow the admissions process described below.
Pre-Architecture admission is generally granted to students acceptable to the University but who applied late or have not qualified for the Fall Design Studio. Pre-Architecture students are enrolled in the School of Architecture and complete all required freshman level courses except the first-year architecture design studio. At such time as all required freshman level courses are completed, and if the overall MSU GPA is a minimum 2.5, pre-architecture students may apply to take the summer first-year design studio.
Admission to the summer design studio is highly competitive, on a space available basis, and not automatic. All transfer students from other disciplines or other colleges or universities are considered Pre-Architecture students. Students intending to spend one year at a community college should seek academic advice from the School of Architecture prior to beginning their course of study. Admission to the summer studio requires submission of a portfolio and Supplemental Applications Form that must be submitted by February 15.
International Undergraduate Students must submit an acceptable score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Even though the Mississippi State University minimum is 525, the School of Architecture requires a minimum of 550. TOEFL scores can be no more than two years old, and must be official and verifiable. Completion of intensive English training or English Composition courses at a U.S. college does not waive the TOEFL requirement.
