SANDY SKOGLUND Visiting Artist
MARCH 22-23, 2007
Posted: February 13, 2007

In late March, the MSU and Starkville community will have an opportunity to experience the creation of a unique work of art at MSU that is sure to bemuse its viewers.
Internationally known artist Sandy Skoglund will be visiting MSU on March 22-23 to give a lecture to the university community and to create a work of art in the form of an “installation”. Installations are works of art in which the artist completely transforms a particular site and then sometimes documents it. In these pieces, Ms. Skoglund takes over a room and places unexpected patterns, textures, colors and objects in it to create a surreal domestic setting that confounds and engages her viewers. She then “documents” the installation in photographs. She often uses products of our consumer culture, such as popcorn, coat hangers or paper plates, to cover everyday objects, transforming their appearance. Her images are thought- provoking and often humorous. Forty to fifty students from the College of Architecture, Art, & Design will participate in the creation of the installation which will take place on Thursday afternoon, March 22 in the last of the three white WPA buildings on University Avenue adjacent to the MSU campus and to the city of Starkville. The public will be able to view the installation the following week (days and times to be announced). All students who participate will receive a Skoglund print.
Ms. Skoglund’s lecture “Reality Under Siege” will be presented at 7:00 pm, on Thursday, March 22 in Simrall Auditorium on the MSU campus. Her lecture will follow the faculty “Open Studios” across the street in Etheredge Hall from 5:00 - 700 pm. She will talk about her own work in relation to contemporary art and American culture. There will be a reception and book signing immediately after the lecture in the lobby. Her book, “Sandy Skoglund, Reality Under Siege”, also will be available at Barnes and Noble bookstore.
On Friday, March 23, Ms. Skoglund will meet with students and faculty in the Department of Art.
Ms. Skoglund teaches at Rutgers University in New Jersey and lives in New York City. Her paintings, photographs, sculpture and installation pieces have been exhibited throughout the world. Her visit is sponsored by the Provost’s Office, the College of Architecture, Art & Design, the College of Arts & Sciences, the Department of Art and the Shackouls Honors College.
Profile
SANDY SKOGLUND
MARCH 22-23, 2007
Sandy Skoglund was born in Quincy, Massachusetts in 1946. Skoglund studied studio art and art history at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts from 1964-68. She went on to graduate school at the University of Iowa in 1969 where she studied filmmaking, intaglio printmaking, and multimedia art, receiving her M.A. in 1971 and her M.F.A. in painting in 1972.
Skoglund moved to New York City in 1972, where she started working as a conceptual artist, dealing with repetitive, process-oriented art production through the techniques of mark-making and photocopying. In the late seventies Skoglund’s desire to document conceptual ideas led her to teach herself photography. This developing interest in photographic technique became fused with her interest in popular culture and commercial picture making strategies, resulting in the directorial tableau work she is known for today. Skoglund currently lives in Jersey City, New Jersey.
