This semester's Special Topics in Art class has turned out to be nothing like what was initially planned in the syllabus. Of course, the students were going to learn many ?real-world? lessons of working in an agency, scheduling, budgeting, the roles and responsibilities of graphic designers, dealing with endless client revisions and other topics relevant to soon-to-be design graduates. But when the hurricane destroyed much of the Mississippi gulf coast, rather than sitting back in shock working on theoretical projects and watching as relief efforts were being launched by organizations outside the state, the students were challenged with the task of creating a unified voice from an insider?s perspective. Armed with unique brainstorming methodolgies but lacking in budget and prior broadcast media knowledge, the students took the initiative to create and produce a national television public service campaign complete with radio script, print ads and web banners in order to inform the rest of the nation of the real needs of Mississippians. They wanted people inside and outside of the state to receive a message that would continue to encourage redevelopment, inspire investment and support the local economy in a positive and uplifting manner ? not in the typical, frequently mawkish fashion utilized in many PSAs. As a result of this program, upper-level students have taken on leadership roles in the development of comprehensive campaigns for non-profit organizations that will put their ideas into practice. The students are coming away with the experience of functioning in an agency capacity while learning the value of social responsibility and bringing awareness to critical issues within their community. With this new outlook of the profession of graphic design, an emerging generation of practitioners will have first-hand experience of their creations making a positive impact on the world around them and a background that supports the idea that graphic designers can do more than merely sell toothpaste.

Design America serves as a bridge between the advertising and creative services industry and the non-profit sector. It provides both the human and financial resources necessary to help charities communicate their missions to those who need help and those who can help. Design American now operates in most major cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Chicago, Dallas, Atlanta, Denver, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Seattle. Responsibilities include teaching pre-college students the communication design philosophies and techniques and introducing them to the concept of thinking in written and visual formats. Long term goals include instituting a program in which connections will be facilitated between non-profit clients in need of support materials and upper-level college students which provides them with direct client contact. Initial case-studies resulted in a student?s work being utilized by client in a national capacity.

Form & Concept/Concept & Form I believe the process of design is a synthesis of conceptual thinking and visually compelling form. Form without concept is pure decoration, and while it may initially be interesting, it ultimately lacks the ability to affect an audience on a deeper level. Concept without equally effective formal qualities can be obscure and potentially meaningless to viewers who are not immediately captured due to sub-par design. Many times students show obvious strengths in one area or another and it is important to analyze each on an individual basis to help the student develop the weaker half. Design schools need to focus on both sides equally, putting emphasis on the development of intriguing concepts and bolstering those concepts with well-considered, smart design.
