Graphic Design Excellence at Mississippi State University

The students in the graphic design program at Mississippi State University have had an amazing year thus far, receiving numerous honors and awards at prestigious design exhibitions across the country. These shows varied in scope, from regional competitions to national and international recognition. The competitions included the Greater Tuscaloosa Area Advertising Federation’s ADDY Awards, the 5 State 7th District AAF ADDYs, and the national AAF ADDYs. MSU students received top honors in the highly competitive 2007 International HOW Magazine Self-Promotional Design Annual in addition to awards in the International Design Against Fur Poster Competition. Students won top honors in the 2007 Real Show in Washington, DC as well as awards in the second annual AIGA Regional Mississippi State University We Heart Graphix competition. MSU student work was also accepted into the Dallas Society of Visual Communication (DSVC) 3rd Annual National Student Show.

Wesley Stuckey received the Outstanding Student Award in the highly competitive 2007 International HOW Magazine Self-Promotional Design Annual. His work was featured as a spread in the October issue of the magazine. Megan Cox and Catherine Yerger were named Student Merit Winners and had their self-promo designs published as well. A total of 16 student designs were published this year out of 1000's of entries. Other schools represented were School of Visual Arts, Pratt Institute and Minneapolis College of Art and Design. MSU student work has been published in this prestigious annual for the last 5 years.

In this year’s ADDY Awards, which begins at the regional level with the Tuscaloosa ADDYs, MSU brought home Gold and Silver awards. The winning pieces advanced up to the 7th district level to compete against schools in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and Louisiana. Catherine Yerger and Kristen Ley won Gold at the district level and their work advanced to the national competition, where Kristen Ley won a National Gold ADDY.

Beverly Hayman won a Juror’s Award with JT Hammon and Kanika Dean receiving Honorable Mentions in the 2007 International Design Against Fur Poster Competition sponsored by the National Humane Society and the Fur Free Alliance. There were over 6000 international entries in this year’s competition. Jurors included internationally known designers Todd Oldham and David Carson.

In the 2007 Real Show, sponsored by the Art Director’s Club of Washington D.C., only 30 entries were accepted from the 200 received, 6 of which represented the MSU graphic design program. JT Hammon and Mary Beth McDavid won Gold awards in the competition. Darren Keel received a Silver award, with Josh Holly, Shauna Cliett and Keeta Stowe receiving Merit awards. The Real Show is an annual competition giving college students the opportunity to solve real-life communication design problems. This year students competed in the areas of identity, packaging and editorial design.

The AIGA Mississippi State Student group held its second annual Mississippi State AIGA Southern Student Invitational this year: We Heart Graphics.  With almost 850 entries from 7 different universities, 110 works were chosen for the show. There were three nationally known jurors. Mississippi State University had 61 student works represented in the show with Mary Beth McDavid, Wesley Stuckey and Darren Keel winning 3 out of the 5 Juror’s Awards.

In the highly competitive Dallas Society of Visual Communication (DSVC) National Annual Student Show, which has received over 2,000 submissions in the past.  MSU student Kristen Ley had work accepted into the show.

Jamie Burwell Mixon, Graphic Design Emphasis Coordinator, summarizes the students’ performance: “Once again our design students have been recognized nationally and internationally. We have an amazing BFA program at Mississippi State University. When you consider our low tuition in comparison with the tuition at the nationally known design programs that MSU students are competing with and winning; we’re a deal, no doubt about it!”
