Professor Jamie Burwell Mixon graduated Summa Cum Laude from Mississippi State University in 1984 with a degree in Graphic Design. She worked as a designer, illustrator and art director at Dux D’Lux Graphics and Vanderbeek & Bost Design Studio for 10 years before joining the faculty of the Department of Art at MSU in 1991.
At MSU, Mixon is the coordinator of the Graphic Design Emphasis Area, teaches graphic design and continues to design for select clients.
She was named a MSU Grisham Master Teacher in 2004 and won a MSU Grisham Teaching Excellence Award in 1996. She has twice been selected as MSU’s CASE Professor of the Year nominee. [She loves teaching.
Since 1991, Mixon’s students have been recognized with numerous regional, national and international awards. In 2007, student works created in her classes have been published in HOW magazine (the Outstanding Student Award, as well as 2 Student Merit Winners; this competition had 1000’s of entries, and a total of 16 student works chosen), won 3 top awards in The REAL Show, sponsored by the Art Director’s Club of Washington, DC. and chosen as a US finalist in the International Design Against Fur poster competition sponsored by the Humane Society, jurors included Todd Oldham and David Carson. [She loves students that love design.
Over the years, Mixon’s designs have won numerous awards. Most recently, she won the Silver Award in the 2006 International American Design Award Competition and a Silver and a Bronze award in the 2006 International Summit Creative Achievement Competition. Her Rolling Stones Poster placed second in the 2007 National Pollstar Concert Industry Awards Poster Competition in Los Angeles in February. She won an American Graphic Design Award in the GDUSA 2007 Design Competition; her work will be published in the December 2007 issue. She also won a Gold Addy and Best-of-Show/Collateral at the 2007 Tuscaloosa Advertising Federation AAF Addy Competition. In the 2006 AAF competition her work won 2 Gold ADDY’s, and a Judge’s Award for Excellence in Design and a Silver Award for poster design in the 5 state 7th District AAF competition. [She loves to draw pictures and arrange them on a page with words.
Mixon believes that a designer has one foot in the world of the fine artist and the other firmly planted in the realm of technology and business and that walking that line is a dangerous, challenging, creative journey. One part of her says "row to the island", the other "be true to your client". Mixon’s quest as a designer and illustrator is to do both; tipping one way then the other, and in the end, finding the balance of her own creative vision. [Her canoe is poised and ready to go.
