INTERIOR DESIGN PROGRAM

The student graduating with a Bachelor of Science, Interior Design from Mississippi State University will be able to show evidence of an awareness, understanding and/or competency in the following:

• Develop skill in drawing, basic design and composition, two- and three-dimensional design, theory of color and light, painting and sculpture.
• Develop understanding of history of art, architecture, and interiors
• Demonstrate knowledge in programming and space planning, textiles and other materials, design of residential and commercial interiors, and design of furniture.
• Carry out complete analysis of problems and present design solutions appropriate to the need, recognizing constraints on construction, materials and/or cost, including specifications of materials.
• Develop skills in speech, graphic arts, presentation techniques, delineation, drafting, and perspective drawing.
• Acquire technical knowledge such as building construction, codes, standards and materials, model making, computer skills, and furniture construction; heating, lighting, air conditioning, and acoustics; energy conservation, solar energy - active and passive; cost estimating, management skills, work scheduling, accounting, specifications writing and contracts; ergonomics and proxemics (human factors); and market sources and manufacturing technology.

The Interior Design Program provides foundation courses at the first year level. The courses for second year build on the skill sets introduced in the first year of study. Studio courses are sequential and are developed so that each semester/year of course work builds upon previous studio experiences. Our pedagogical strategy includes development of specific objectives and outcomes designed to facilitate deeper understanding of complex concepts as program progression occurs. The final studio, which is taught by a practicing professional, culminates with a real project and includes activities that bridge the gap for the student between school and the professional practice of interior design.
