Coming to the Camp

Posted: May 03, 2007

Welcome to the Extreme Design: College Edition summer program at Mississippi State University! We are affiliated with and funded by the GEARUP Mississippi Program. Extreme Design is a week-long immersion in university culture with an emphasis on the principles of Architecture, Art, and Interior Design. We will host design competitions, and you will participate in activities that require you to build, draw, design, listen, and look. For each night of the camp, we have planned a social event for our students. Some of the social events will be held in conjunction with other summer camps, so you will have the opportunity to meet even more students from across the state. Most importantly, we hope you will have fun learning about the possibilities of careers in the field of design.

You will be residing at Hull Hall on the Mississippi State University campus. Hull Hall is located on Barr Avenue just east of the football stadium. Hull has ample parking and is easily accessible from all parts of campus. There will be six camp counselors staying with you in the dorm, guiding you around the campus, and assisting with teaching and learning.

You need to bring a set of sheets (single or twin size), blankets, and a pillow for your dorm room. Each student will have a roommate. Cell phones and i-Pods are fine to bring but, we discourage students from bringing large "boom box" radios or stereos. TV’s are not recommended.

Hull Hall is close to Giles Hall, the architecture building, where most of the design and building will be taking place. You will be walking to Giles every day as well as to the cafeteria and other places on campus, so we recommend closed-toe shoes. We also suggest you bring clothes that will be comfortable both indoors and outdoors. One of our evening sessions is in the Sanderson Center, the student recreation building, which is

equipped with a pool. With your parent’s permission, you may bring a swimsuit and swim during the recreation session.

You should arrive between 4 pm and 5 pm on June 10th. Our first activity begins at 5:30. We ask that parents or guardians please be punctual in dropping off their students.

We will host a "gallery opening" for family and friends at 11 am on June 15th so your family can see your accomplishments during the week. You will be checked out of your dorm immediately following the gallery tour – about 12:00. By committing to the camp, parents and guardians are agreeing to provide punctual transportation to and from the camp
