Having studied with Edward Reep, Funderburk was trained within a tradition of rigor, risk, media exploration, and emphasis upon engaging composition and scale. A North Carolina native, his early influences were the "near-sighted wilderness of the backyard", and artists Charles Burchfield, Walter Anderson, and Vincent van Gogh- with whom he shares a search for the holy in the local given.
