Department Head

Department Head, Department of Art, Mississippi State University,Starkville, MS, at rank of tenured, Full Professor, beginning July 1,2009. Qualifications include a terminal degree, experience and strong evidence of leadership ability, an established national record in creative research or scholarship, and a distinguished record of teaching and service meriting the rank of Full Professor with tenure; relevant art department administrative experience is desirable. The Department Head manages and evaluates all aspects within the Department of Art (i.e. daily office and building operations, budget, personnel, and scheduling). These duties require excellent communication skills; an understanding of contemporary art and design practices; and the abilities of a dynamic and effective leader, advocate, and mentor. The Head is responsible for fostering collegiality, building consensus, and articulating and promoting the Department's goals and interests.

Additional duties as the department head include representing the Department at the college and university level as well as in the community and among alumni; providing leadership for the Department as it develops its curriculum for the future; supporting and balancing the needs of the Department's diverse options and programs, including management of Department resources and performing normal administrative duties; establishing, implementing and maintaining a development plan in tandem with the College development officer to draw upon the resources of alumni, philanthropic, community, and industry-based groups; teaching in the undergraduate degree programs (one class per semester) and maintaining research/creative activities; supervising and mentoring faculty and staff as well as the operation of the Department of Art Building facilities. Qualifications include a MFA or PhD or other appropriate terminal degree within the field of study; a record of national recognition and excellence in teaching and research/creativity that justifies appointment as a Full Professor in the Department; a record of excellent leadership; understanding of contemporary art and design and awareness of new directions in these fields. The person filling this position must be able to work effectively with a wide range of people: faculty, staff, students, alumni, donors, university leaders, parents and friends of the University. The position requires effective decision-making, problem solving, creative management, embracing of new technology, and a high level of energy, dedication, and passion for the future of art and design.

The Head must be able to represent the Mississippi State University Department of Art to the outside world, advocate for art and design at the university level, and speak clearly to the members of the College of Architecture, Art, and Design. The ideal candidate will bring to the position a strong professional background, excellent management skills, the proven ability to gain and manage resources, and a record of successful leadership. Evidence of visionary thinking and the highest standards of art and design excellence are essential. Excellence in art and design may be demonstrated through the proven track record of an inspired practitioner and/or teacher, researcher, and administrator. The individual should have potential for teaching, research and professional activities at the rank of Full Professor.

Assistant Professor for Graphic Design

The Department of Art at Mississippi State University seeks to hire one full-time tenure track Assistant Professor in Graphic Design to begin in Fall 2009. Salary commensurate with experience. Duties include teaching courses in Graphic Design, Typography, Advertising Design, Print Production, and Graphic Design History. Duties also include student advising, committee service, and the pursuit of an active body of research. Candidates required to have an MFA/terminal degree in graphic design or related field. Teaching experience required. Professional experience preferred. Candidates should be proficient with design applications including Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
