From the Department Head
We offer seven emphasis areas which are located in three adjacent buildings on campus: Stafford Hall (Graphic Design, Art History and Foundations), Freeman Hall (Foundations, Drawing and Painting), Briscoe Hall (Ceramics, Photography and Printmaking) and Howell Hall (Sculpture). Through program changes in the past few years, we have been able to expand the computer labs available to our undergraduates to three, create a larger foundations classroom and a new digital photography lab. We have doubled studio space available to seniors who are completing their thesis exhibition. The department has also acquired space in Etheredge Hall for faculty studios and a Lighting Studio which is used by both faculty and students to document their work on a professional level. The recent hiring of five new faculty members in Foundations, Digital Photography, Sculpture and Graphic Design has energized our program and has enabled us to provide new course offerings. We now have twenty faculty members and 260 undergraduate students.
Our recent merger into the College of Architecture, Art, and Design has brought with it a number of new opportunities. We have created a new course “Concept and Form” which is required of every college freshman. This course aims to introduce students to the creative process and the common language that we all employ in our separate programs. We are also collaborating in the college to form a stimulating lecture and visiting artist program that will appeal to all of our students. And, we have worked together to offer students opportunities to travel through field trips to major cities in the United States and through a summer Study Abroad Program in Italy. I invite you to browse through our website for more information about our vital and growing program.
