ID 1694: ID Studio I

Posted: September 02, 2007

This is the initial design studio for ID majors. There are two major goals: understanding residential construction and beginning to explore the design process. During the semester, we cover construction related information from foundations to roof design. We also explore mechanical, electrical; and plumbing systems for residential architecture. Each week there is a one hour lecture, worksheets, and a quiz on the construction material. The rest of the class time is spent on project work. The first project is the construction of a ¾ scale model of a townhouse using actual construction methods. This project is a 3-d manifestation implementing the concepts and information students are studying from the text. The second project builds on the previous graphics knowledge and introduces the design process from programming to construction documentation. The basis of the project is the completed townhouse structure. Final presentation boards are created to present the design of the space

Posted: September 02, 2007

Course Description

Course Overview

This class was added to the curriculum to address the new technologies of three-dimensional modeling that are emerging in the Interior Design field.  The class covers three specific software programs and their roles in the design process.  Students start with Google SketchUp, progress to Autodesk Revit, and then create realistic interior renderings employing Autodesk Viz.

When students complete the class, they have developed cutting edge computer skills that will make them more marketable to professional firms in the future. This has already been proven with our recent. One was hired because she had experience with this software. The firm she interviewed with was not planning on having an intern, but when they learned of her exposure to these technology tools, decided to hire her.
